George A. Macones, M.D., MSCE, is chair of the Department of Women’s Health and a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin. Macones is an internationally recognized expert in obstetrics and provides clinical care as a UT Health Austin provider.

A native of Philadelphia, Macones earned his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College and completed a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Pennsylvania Hospital. He also completed a fellowship in maternal-fetal medicine at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital before earning a master’s degree in clinical epidemiology from the University of Pennsylvania.

After 10 years on the faculty at the University of Pennsylvania, Macones moved to Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis to become chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, where he served for 14 years.

Macones has held leadership positions in the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine. He has over 400 publications, and his research has been funded by the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development; National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute; National Cancer Institute; and March of Dimes. He currently serves on the board of directors for both the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and American Board of Family Medicine and is deputy editor for obstetrics for the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Macones is an elected member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation and the National Academy of Medicine.
