Kevin Alter has practiced professionally in Massachusetts, New York, and Texas, and he has taught at the Boston Architecture Center, Bennington College and The Catholic University of America. Alter has received several design awards for his professional work, including a 1998 AIA Honor Award for the Tonnesen House (in partnership with D. Heymann) and has been published in Architecture magazine and Texas Architect. He is editor of Center #9, Regarding the Proper(University of Texas Press, 1995), Construction Intention Detail(Artemis, Zurich 1994) and the Harvard Architecture Review #9 (Rizzoli, 1993). His writings also have been published in Progressive Architecture, Cite and Newsline. He has curated 12 separate exhibitions and lectured both nationally and internationally. His research includes a preoccupation with the relationship between the material fact of architecture and social occasion, which has been pursued in his professional practice, scholarship and teaching. Alter serves on the Board of Directors for DOCOMOMO/US; as Associate Director of the Center for American Architecture and Design; as Chairman of the School of Architecture Lectures and Exhibitions Committee; as Director of the Summer Academy in Architecture; and he teaches undergraduate and graduate design, construction and theory courses.
