Kirk Goldsberry is a clinical assistant professor in management at The University of Texas at Austin’s McCombs School of Business. He is also the director of the Business of Sports Institute at McCombs’ Center for Leadership and Ethics, where he teaches courses on sports analytics.

Goldsberry has an extensive background in sports writing and analysis. His research interests include spatial and visual analytics in basketball, and he uses his expertise in geography and cartography to map and analyze basketball shots. Before joining McCombs, Goldsberry was vice president for strategic research for the San Antonio Spurs and a correspondent for Grantland, an online sports publication owned by ESPN. He has also written two books, “SprawlBall: A Visual Tour of the New Era of the NBA” and “Hoop Atlas: Mapping the Remarkable Transformation of the Modern NBA.”

Before pursuing a career in basketball analysis, Goldsberry was an assistant professor of geography at Michigan State University and a visiting professor at Harvard University’s Center for Geographic Analysis.

Goldsberry earned Ph.D. and M.S. degrees in geography from the University of California, Santa Barbara. He holds a B.S. in earth sciences from Penn State University.
