Dr. Helper received a Ph.D. in geology from the University of Texas at Austin and a B.S. in geology from the University of Illinois. As a former Distinguished Senior Lecturer, now retired, his main duties were teaching-related. He taught undergraduate courses in Field Geology, GIS and GPS Applications in the Earth Sciences, and Gems and Gem Minerals, and lectured and led field trips for other undergraduate and graduate classes. Since Emeritus status and retirement from teaching in 2022, he remains active as a Faculty Associate, doing GIS-focused work with the Jackson School Bureau of Economic Geology STATEMAP program and participating in collaborative field work with colleagues there and elsewhere. With NASA colleagues, he has been active in teaching astronauts field geology since 2009, and continues to participate in efforted centered on a return to human exploration of the moon.
