Dr. Richard Cleary joined the faculty of the School of Architecture in 1995. He is an architectural historian specializing in early modern European architecture and city design, and topics in 29th-century architecture in the United States. He has particular interest in architect-client relationship. Richard Cleary is an architectural historian. A native of Madison, Wisconsin, he earned his B.A. and M.A. from the University of Wisconsin and his Ph.D. from Columbia University. Before his appointment at The University of Texas, he taught at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. He is the author of "The Place Royale and Urban Design in the Ancien R?gime " (Cambridge Univeristy Press, 1999), a study of the politics of urban design in France during the 17th and 18th centuries. He is also the author of "Merchant Prince and Master Builder: Edgar J. Kaufmann and Frank Lloyd Wright " (Carnegie Museum of Art and University of Washington Press, 1999), the catalog for the exhibition that he curated for the Heinz Architectural Center of Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh. This exhibition examines the enduring relationship between Wright and one of his most loyal patrons from which sprang Fallingwater, one of the greatest buildings of the 20th century. He currently is working on topics concerning the architecture of French immigrants in 19th-century Texas.
