Richard J. Reddick is the inaugural Senior Vice Provost for Curriculum and Enrollment and the Dean of Undergraduate Studies at The University of Texas at Austin. He comes to this position after serving the last several years as inaugural associate dean for equity, community engagement, and outreach for the College of Education at the university and serving as Professor in the Program in Higher Education Leadership in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy (ELP) at the university.
Reddicks work history and engagement at the university is extensive. He has served as the assistant director of the Plan II Honors Program in the College of Liberal Arts, a faculty member by courtesy in the Department for African and African Diaspora Studies, the John L. Warfield Center for African and African American Studies, and a fellow at the Institute for Urban Policy Research and Analysis. Reddick teaches graduate courses on the history of higher education, multicultural modes of mentoring, social and cultural contexts of education, and qualitative research methods. He also teaches undergraduate courses in Plan II Honors and the Signature Course program in Undergraduate Studies. Reddick formerly co-chaired the Council for Racial and Ethnic Equity and Diversity, served on the Signature Course Advisory Committee, and was named to the inaugural cohort of the Provosts Distinguished Service Academy.
His commitment to education, teaching, research, and service extends past UT. In spring 2018, Reddick was appointed as a visiting associate professor at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. He is the faculty co-chair for the Institute for Educational Management (IEM) at Harvard University and teaches in the Institute for Management Leadership in Education.
Reddick is an award-winning teacher and scholar; most recently receiving the 2021-2022 Presidents Award for Global Learning (PAGL). At the 2019 Tower Awards, Reddick was named Outstanding Community Based Learning Professor and in 2018 he received the Austin L.E.A.D.S. Award from the Austin Community College Office of Equity and Inclusions I.D.E.A.L. Center. Reddick has published dozens of journal articles and opinion pieces and is the co-author and co-editor of four books.
As the universitys new chief student success officer, Reddick brings a wealth of experience and knowledge from his academic background and professional experience. Reddick earned his Bachelor of Arts from UT Austin in Plan II Liberal Arts Honors and was named a College of Liberal Arts Distinguished Deans Graduate. He then went on to teach elementary and middle school in the Fifth Ward of Houston, Texas. Following his time as a public-school educator, Reddick worked in student affairs at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, and Emory University. He earned both his masters and doctoral degrees from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
In addition to scholarly activities, a fun fact: he is a past champion of Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy! His most important titles are husband to his wife Sherry and dad to his son Karl and daughter Katherine. When not advocating for students and working on behalf of faculty and staff, Reddick is reading and spending time with family and friends.
